10 Ubuntu apps and tweaks every user should have.

I myself have recently went from using Windows as my only OS running Ubuntu on most of my computers. Over the years, I have played around with several flavors of Linux. My first distro was Linux Workstation, followed shortly thereafter with RedHat 7. A few years went by before I picked it up again and this time it was with RedHat 9. But with all of these distro’s it is hard to recommend any of them to my normal users. They are really difficult to install anything if you are not a geek. After that, I had a friend recommend gentoo, which seemed really good, but nothing for a non-techie to work with. Then I got hold of Fedora Core 5. I greatly enjoyed using it and had a machine that was dedicated to running it. But I still thought it was a little to difficult for the type of people I generally deal with. Finally, someone pointed me to Ubuntu, and I was amazed. At this point I recommend to everyone to at least try it. I have converted my Fedora machine over to Ubuntu and this I allow my clients to use for 2 weeks just to see how they like it. There were several apps I was recommending to everyone, but once I found this post by Adam Pash over at LifeHacker.com, I saw how much I was really missing. So I wanted to share this with everyone.

Andy starts his article out…

When I made the switch to Ubuntu Linux on my desktop computer (that is, if you can call triple-booting Windows XP, Vista, and Ubuntu a “switch”), I was a little worried about finding the applications and tools that would make me as productive working in Ubuntu as I am working on Windows.

After a little searching around the interweb, however, I’ve been more than impressed with the number of great, full-featured applications available for Linux, many of which outshine their Windows counterparts. And what’s best – they’re all totally free. Here are my top 10 favorite applications and tweaks that made replacing Windows with Ubuntu a breeze.
