MS Vista -vs- Ubuntu(Edgy-Eft)
I just read this awesome article comparing Vista with Ubuntu Edgy-Eft at Re-Cycledair.com. I am only throwing in my 2 cents on this issue, as I believe the original post is excellent and there isn’t any need for another similar article. If you haven’t read about my experience with installing Vista, you may want to read the article ‘Worth the trouble of upgrading to Windows Vista?’. I personally have always been a user of Microsoft, though not always a fan. Linux was the route I wanted to take, but I just didn’t have the time required to make everything work as I needed it to. Here is my take on Vista, after you are finished, read the above mentioned post at recycledair.com.
- Microsoft spent a hell of alot of time designing a great UI for Vista.
- They spend more time making it impossible to install anything. The new Mac commercial points out how ridiculous it is when you install anything on Vista. How many times do I have to confirm that I want to install something.
- The new sidebar is awesome, though you could do most everything and more with the Yahoo widgets for the past several years.
- If you use IIS, have fun spending time trying to figure out the new IIS Admin.
- In XP, when you were in the control panel and switched to classic view, you actually got the Classic view from NT and Win2000. With Vista, I am not sure what classic view is. I spend 10 minutes every time I go in there trying to figure out what they have renamed existing items to. (Add/Remove Progams is now Programs and Features)
- With any Linux distro, good luck getting your wireless card to work. The one in my Dell Inspiron 5150 works, but has to constantly be reinitialized. Sorry to you Linux geeks out there if that is the wrong term for it.
- I have yet to find a decent IDE for web development that will run on Linux. There are a few that are ok, but they can’t touch Visual Studio.
- You can pretty much find any software to accomplish any task in Linux, and it will probably be free. I am surprised Microsoft doesn’t charge for services packs and hot fixes.

Sounds like a pretty decent synopsis of the article. What IDEs have you tried in Linux? I like eclipse but a lot of the time use vim (which has quite a learning curve but is really powerful).
I’ve spent quite a lot of time working with wireless in Linux. If you want to tell me your distro and card type I might be able to help you get that more stable. I know what a pain it can be to have flaky wireless.
As far as IDE’s go, I have tried gPHPEdit, Geany, Emacs, & Zend Studio. I must admit, for PHP development, I can’t find anything better than Zend. Even on my Windows PCs, I use Zend for PHP. I was really impressed with it’s intellisense capabilities. I also tried Cssed for doing CSS stuff, but find it very flaky.
My distro is Ubuntu Edgy (6.11). And I am using the Dell Wireless 1350 WLAN Mini-PCI Card. It would be nice if it worked consistently. I could then just run most of my windows stuff through vmware and be done with it.
